Italy: Open Arms Rescue Vessel Docks With 122 Rescued Migrants in Messina

Spanish Open Arms rescue vessel reached Italy’s Messina port where 122 rescued migrants disembarked on Wednesday.

“There are 122 people who we saved in two different rescue operations. In the first case it was a wooden boat with four men on board, in the second case it was a rubber boat with about 78 people and also two men that had jumped into the water from a Libyan patrol boat, being scared of them they swam towards us when they saw our rescue boats,” said Head of Open Arms mission Anabel Montes.

Footage shows the rescue vessel docking in Messina’s port where Italian Carabinieri police officers, as well as Red Cross and first-aid volunteers, were waiting for the migrants to disembark five days after being rescued.

Two pregnant women, as well as young children, were also among the rescued. German-run Sea-Watch 3 also docked in a southern Italian, Taranto, on Wednesday with at least 119 rescued migrants from three different rescue operations.
