“I Didn’t Sweat at the Time”: Prince Andrew and the Malvinas Malady

Prince Andrew and the Royal Family are coming under increasing fire following Andrew’s “car crash” interview with the BBC, an interview focusing on his links with dead American sex trafficker and paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Looking to contain speculation and fallout following the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein “suicide” and the previous sex scandal that saw him imprisoned, Prince Andrew sat down with the BBC’s Emily Maitlis for a lengthy and bizarre interview broadcast last night on BBC Newsnight.

The Duke of York has been linked to Epstein via the accusations of Virginia Giuffre who claims she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew between 1999 and 2002 and that she was kept as a sex slave by Epstein.

Andrew stated that he “absolutely categorically” denied the allegation and that it “never happened” adding that he had “no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever”, yet his denials have been far overshadowed by his absurdist claims and general manner during the interview.

Quite what the Prince’s intentions were with the interview was anybody’s guess, but any attempt to close the matter or offer a defence went wildly off track and Buckingham Palace is coming under increasing scrutiny for their role in covering up Andrew’s role in the case.

Amongst the absurd claims made by the Queen’s son during the interview was that he “weirdly distinctly” remembered taking his daughter to Pizza Express in Woking on one of the nights Giuffre claimed they had sex and that during the period in question he “didn’t sweat at the time” after being shot during the Falklands conflict, supposedly countering Giuffre’s claim that he was “profusely sweating” when they danced.

“I didn’t sweat at the time because I had suffered what I would describe as an overdose of adrenalin in the Falkland’s War when I was shot at.”

Prince Andrew

The Johnnie Cochran worthy claims have been met with derision online, with images of Andrew clearly sweating being posted alongside general mockery.

Alongside the ridiculous defence that the Duke of York is building, critics have also blasted his attempts to downplay the affair by calling sex offender Epstein  merely “unbecoming” and stating that he had “let the side down” over the matter as though he’d been caught out at cricket.

Alongside the photographic evidence of Andrew in the company of Virginia Giuffre, there is an abundance of evidence that there was indeed an inappropriate relationship between Giuffre and Andrew. While she was barely above the British age of consent there are also flight logs that suggest she may have entered the UK at the behest of Epstein and Andrew, making a case for sex trafficking.

Leaked audio recordings from ABC News in America reveal that Buckingham Palace has been placing increasing pressure on news outlets to squash the story of Andrew’s involvement with Epstein, ABC said to have been concerned at losing access to Prince William and his wife Catherine.

While the new claims from Prince Andrew may find some amusement, they should not detract from the very real arrogance on display and the humour with which the Duke of York seems to be treating the very serious case. The sense that Prince Andrew believes himself to be above the law is self-evident, and the Royal Family are becoming increasingly embroiled in a scandal that has the potential to inflict damage on the Royals that would eclipse even the death of Princess Diana.
