Greece: Lesvos Locals March in Solidarity With Refugees and Against New Detention Centres

Nearly 1,000 residents in Lesvos’ main city of Mytilene took to the streets in solidarity with refugees and migrants stranded in the camps of the island on Saturday.

People marched carrying banners and chanting slogans along Mytilene’s marina, amid a heavy police presence and despite the measures in place to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Activists, who were also protesting against recent attacks on refugees and NGO workers, were also demanding the government to halt the construction of new centres to replace current facilities, which are running overcapacity.

Tensions have recently escalated in the Aegean island in the wake of the last influx of refugees, following Turkey’s decision to open its western borders and allow them to cross into the EU.
