Chile: Teargas and Water Cannons Used to Disperse Anti-Govt Protest in Santiago

Teargas and a water cannon were used by Chilean police to disperse hundreds of protesters who flooded Santiago streets and Plaza Italia square on Tuesday.

Protesters were seen hurling rocks at police which, in turn, responded with teargas and deployed a water cannon, with one protester seen being arrested and put into a police vehicle.

The current wave of demonstrations, considered to be the largest in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations amid calls for the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
