Chile: Police Use Water Cannons Amid Clashes As Protests Enter Third Month

Police deployed water cannons, tear gas and armoured vehicles in Santiago on Friday, as thousands of anti-government protesters marked the third month since nation-wide protests broke out Chile.

Protesters were seen launching Molotov cocktails and other projectiles while police drove armoured vehicles at the crowd, forcing people to flee in panic.

Chile has been rocked by nation-wide protests since October, which were triggered by a now-withdrawn increase in subway fares have since turned into a wider social movement. Social discontent has been fuelled by frustration with President Sebastian Pinera’s policies and growing inequality.
