Chile: Police Fire Tear Gas at Anti-Govt Protesters in Santiago's 'Sanhattan'

Police fired tear gas at protesters who were demonstrating in Chile’s capital financial district, also known as Sanhattan, on Wednesday.

Demonstrators blocked streets, burnt barricades and held anti-government signs near South America’s highest building, Gran Torre Santiago, as they faced off with police officers.

The current wave of demonstrations, considered to be the largest in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations amid calls for the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
