Breaking: Man Attempts to Murder Prayer Caller at London Central Mosque

There are reports of an stabbing in London this afternoon after an attack on the mu’azzin at Regents Park’s London Central Mosque, the mu’azzin being the man who calls the prayer.

The Metropolitan Police have stated that they were called to the mosque at 3.10 pm to reports of a stabbing. A man in his 70s was found injured after being stabbed in the neck. His condition is believed to be non-life-threatening.

The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Speculation on social media was that the incident was terrorist motivated, howveer the imam of the mosque has stated that the man had “mental health issues”.

The mu’azzin is the individual appointed at a mosque to lead and recite the call to prayer. He is chosen for his good character, voice and skills to serve at the mosque. The mu’azzin is not considered a cleric but in a position comparable to a Christian verger.

The attack comes hours after a far-right attack in Germany killed at least 10 at two shisha bars in the town of Hanau. The terrorist opened fire outside one shisha bar in Hanau near Frankfurt and drove to a second location within the city where he opened fire again, killing nine people and injuring several others. According to reports, the suspect was a 43-year-old German citizen from Hanau. Together with his 72-year-old mother, he was found dead at his address in the early hours of Thursday morning.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said early signs indicate that the Hanau shooting perpetrator had acted out of “extreme far-right, racist motives.”

More on both these stories as they develop.
