Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was joined by several thousand mainly young climate activists from across Belgium on a march through Brussels on Friday.
Greta Thunberg took part in the march and gave a speech on the podium slamming the European climate law as a law which “basically says that we will once again wait a few more years to start putting the fire out.”
Demonstrators can be seen waving flags and chanting slogans as they march through the Belgian capital.
“We cannot wait for a wonder, it’s time for humanity itself to solve shit we’re in. It seems like everybody thinks we are the center of the universe provided by divine things and everything will solve itself. Many people try to believe that but it’s not true,” explained Koen Stevens, a climate activist who was dressed as Jesus and carrying a big cross for the occasion.
“The Green Deal is disappointing because it doesn’t take into account that war is a very big polluter and that the Pentagon is the biggest individual polluter in the world. So, I believe the climate people have to make the link between the peace movement and war and I don’t think the politicians want to tackle climate because they don’t want to tackle war. Both go hand-in-hand, you can’t separate the war issue from the climate issue,” said Nilufar Ahstari, a climate activist.
The march was being held to mark the European climate strike. As well as the Belgian protesters, many other young climate change campaigners from across Europe took part in the march in the vicinity of the European Commission headquarters.
